As the advertising mantra goes, soup is good food. Of course, when you are trying to live on a gluten free diet, you need to be careful about what goes into your soups. The best way to ensure that you aren’t getting any high levels of gluten in your diet is to create your own soups and make sure that you are always using gluten free ingredients. When preparing to make the following soup, be sure to check the labels so you do not have any stray gluten products making their way into your meal.

Soups are a great food for the colder months of the year. In the winter, it is customary to make the soups richer and more filling, and this recipe will help you create a great meal for those wintry times.

You will need to have the following ingredients on hand to make your soup.

  • 2 quarts of chicken stock
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • A small, chopped onion
  • 3 to 5 sliced carrots
  • 1 tsp of dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp of dried basil
  • ¼ cup of fresh, chopped parsley
  • 2 cups of uncooked white rice
  • ½ a cup of heavy cream
  • 3 – 4 links of sliced Italian sausage (make sure you buy gluten free)

Turn you stovetop on to medium heat and heat the oil in large pot. Add the onion and the garlic and sauté until is softens. Add the sausage and cook until is brown on all sides. You will then add the chicken stock, basil, parsley and oregano. Bring this to a boil and then reduce the heat. You will let it simmer for about an hour before you add the carrots and the rice (as well as any other tasty veggies you might think to add). Simmer until the rice is tender. Finally, you will stir in the cream until it blends into the soup. Remove from the heat and wait until it is a bit cooler before serving. It makes a great lunch or dinner, and it is perfect for leftovers.

Italy is a beautiful country. It has an amazing amount of historical sites and culture to explore, and it has some of the world’s greatest authentic Italian restaurants. Winnipeg residents who are thinking of visiting Italy will find some great places to visit. Many of those areas are very tourist friendly, but some travelers crave an authentic Italian experience. For those vacationers, visiting one of the smaller cities can be like a breath of fresh air. Here are several hidden gems that you may want to visit.

The city of Parma, located in northern Italy, has a number of great restaurants. It also has interesting cultural events and plenty of fascinating museums. You will be able to see the amazing architecture and artwork in the 12th century baptistery as well as some other historic sites of note.

Located near the Adriatic Sea, Ravenna is most famous for the mosaics it offers. You will be able to see some impressive mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries along the walls of the monuments and churches in the city. You will also be able to find some remains and ruins of the Roman Empire. The city also has some interesting museums.

If you want to visit Venice, but you do not want to contend with all of the other tourists each day, consider staying in Padua. It’s only a short distance from Venice. In Padua, you will be able to visit Europe’s first botanical garden, the Basilica di Sant Antonio, or just relax in the main square and have a quick meal at one of the cafés.

When you are planning your Italy trip, remember that you do not have to stay in Rome of one of the other large cities. You have an entire country to explore with small cities, towns and villages that are just as interesting as the large tourist centers.

  • We became a fully independent restaurant.
  • We introduced a completely Gluten Free line of foods to enjoy.  We are proudly serving gluten free pizza crusts, wraps, pastas, cheese, desserts and beer! This means that those who have decided to live a gluten-free lifestyle need not worry about substitutions.
  • We grew our own herbs on our patio this summer to use in our dishes. Talk about local flavour!
  • We were lucky to have an old employee Roberta Hanson & Michelle Gamache create a beautiful mural on our patio wall.
  • All in all we were very lucky. And for the month of January we want to share the appreciation. To get a $15 off coupon right now, sign up for our Italian Insiders Club.
